Literature Analysis Responce

Part One:
The plot of my novel takes place during a war and in a prison called slaughter house five. Its about a man who lives his life in this prison during a war in Eastern Germany where he survived this bombing of World War II. The ending is Billy and the rest of his group was locked up and one morning Billy woke up and it was unlocked. Billy went out to wonder and the war was over there was no one, no cars, no people or anything just one abandoned wagon.

Part Two:
I think the main theme of this novel is War. This novel shows us how bad war can be. It focuses in on a couple of people and how bombing of the wars and just wars in general effects the lives of people personally.

Part Three:
I think the protagonist is a flat character because even though he does change a little through out the book he never really shows a happy side. He never changes from the way he is to a different way. Another major character in this book would be Billy because his pligrims get bombed.

Part Four:
I think a significant saying out of the book would be in the ending when it says, " World War II In Europe was over." I think I think this is not only significant to just one character or just one theme of the novel but to all of them. The characters in this novel haven't felt what it was like to be free from the war. So when this quote is said in the book it signify's a great change that is soon to come and all the other characters can live freely from this war which will drastically change their lives.

Part Five:
I chose this book for two reasons. One because it has a war like setting and I like that type of stuff in books and two, Im not going to lie, is because it was a smaller book and I have a hard time with reading. What appealed to me was the war like setting like i stated earlier. I just like knowing what happened back then and how the wars were. It came to my attention from Mr. Ostini because he said its a good book and itll fit me better instead of a bigger book. Like i said before what about the book that made me want to keep reading it was it giving me a general idea of how life was back then for certain people.

Part Six:
In the book Billy was locked up like i said before and then he woke up and the door was unlocked and he was free. I can connect this to my life because in this situation Billy is prevented from doing anything and some how he is free in my life this relates to me in many ways. For one, one time i got grounded and my said that i have to stay in my room all night but then after my nap i woke up and she said its fine that i dont have to stay in their anymore. Even though this is like nothing compared to Billy being locked up in prison but it shows me how it might have been for him.

Part Seven:
One Idea that i am going to take away from thier book it dont complain about what you dont have and be happy with what you do have. I say this because this book along with many other books like this has taught me that their are people in this world who has either had it worse than me. These people in this novel have been bombed, imprisoned, and sent to war while i have just been getting to much homework. This novel has taught me not to complain because i could have it worse.

Literature Analysis #1

Summary

Theme
I think the theme of this story is fighting for someone you love. In the story it tells us that the fathers wife kills herself because she doesn't want to run and put up with her child but the father stays. He stays and walks this road with his son protecting him with his life. The father always tells his son that they will survive even though the son says there going to die. The father believes its his job from god to keep his son alive and he does. He fights for the boy and gives him all that he can. The father truly loved him and gave all he had to protect him.

Why I Chose This Book
I chose this book because it looked interesting and it sounded interesting. Honestly, the main reason it got my attention was because it looked short and had big words on each page. I know this sounds lazy but I'm not a big fan of reading but in the end it turned out to be an interesting but very difficult book; it was not what i expected.
Connections
I think in my opinion it can connect to someone's life. Meaning your life would be the road, the man would be you, and the boy is someone or something in your life you cherish. The connection I mad with it is my life in school. My life has been very difficult with all the school work I have and a lot of the times i just want to give up but I know I can't because my education is what I'm fighting for. Even though I fall and I get pushed to the limit and sometimes i just want to burn all my school stuff and quit but i  know in order for me to get what i want I have to keep on walking.

Tone
McCarthy’s tone is very visual, Gothic and depressive in the imagery of its extremely dark world.

Literary Elements

Metaphor:
He mistrusted all of that. He said the right dreams for a man in peril were dreams of peril and all else was the call of languor and of death.
Hyperbole:
He said: If he is not the word of God, God never spoke.

Simile:
He'd carried his billfold about till it wore a corner shaped hole in his trousers. Then one      day he sat by the roadside and took it out and went through the contents. Some money, credit cards. His driver's license. A picture of his wife. He spread everything out on the blacktop. Like gaming cards.
Personification:
They passed through towns that warned people away with messages scrawled on the billboards.

Symbolism:
"You can't. You have to carry the fire." "I don't know how to." "Yes you do." "Is it real? The fire?" "Yes it is." "Where is it? I don't know where it is." "Yes you do. It's inside you.   It was always there. I can see it."

Metaphor/Simile:
The nights were blinding cold and casket black and the long reach of the morning had a   terrible silence to it. Like a dawn before battle. The boy's candle colored skin was all but translucent. With his great staring eyes he'd the look of an alien.

Imagery:
The cold relentless circling of the intestate earth. Darkness implacable. The blind dogs of the sun in their running. The crushing black vacuum of the universe.

Personification:
Yes it is. When we're all gone at last then there'll be nobody here but death and his days will be numbered too. He'll be out in the road there with nothing to do and nobody to do it to. He'll say: Where did everybody go? And that's how it will be. What's wrong with that?

Simile:
They set out through the dark woods. There was a moon somewhere beyond the ashen overcast and they could just make out the trees. The staggered on like drunks.

Metaphor:
No list of things to be done. The day providential to itself. The hour. There is no later. This is later. All things of grace and beauty such that one holds them to one's heart have a common provenance in pain. Their birth in grief and ashes. "So," he whispered to the sleeping boy, "I have you."
Direct/Indirect Characterization

Direct:
“(The Boy) Can I ask you something?
(The Man) Yes. Of course you can.
(The Boy) What would you do if I died?
(The Man) If you died I would want to die too.
(The Boy) So you could be with me?
(The Man) Yes. So I could be with you.
(The Boy) Okay.” (pg. 11)

Indirect
"The boy squatted and put a hand on his shoulder. He's scared, Papa. The man is scared.
He looked up the road and down. If this is an ambush he goes first, he said.
He's just scared, Papa.
Tell him we wont hurt him.
The old man shook his head from side to side, his fingers laced in his filthy hair. The boy looked up at his father.
Maybe he thinks we're not real.
What does he think we are?
I dont know.
We cant stay here. We have to go.
He's scared, Papa.
I dont think you should touch him.
Maybe we should give him something to eat.
He stood there looking off down the road. Damn, he whispered. He looked down at the old man. Perhaps he'd turn into a god and they to trees. All right, he said. page 162-163

Static/Dynamic/Flat/Round
The protagonist was pretty much a round character. He changed several times through out the book he went from being a loving father to a man who would kill someone to a an that doesn't trust anyone to a man who doesn't care about anyone besides his son but then again he is kind of a flat character because even though he changed in all these ways over all he was always loving and caring to his son.

Feelings After Reading
After reading this book I feel like I know the father pretty well because I can kind of relate to him. Threw out the book his job was to make sure his son was safe and survived. He loved his son so much that he would kill anybody that would try and hurt him even if ment getting himself killed. I relate to him and see where he is coming from because I feel the same way and would do the same things for my girlfriend. Except for the road and all the troubles they faced would just be the struggles in my world that me and her face being in a relationship. So I feel how papa does where he would do anything to protect the one he loves.

Enduring Memory
An importance i'm going to take away from this book is that during life there is going to be challenges there are going to be situations where it seems like you wont survive or be able to pull your self out but in the end in life you have to keep on trying in this book i seen the road as the road of my life I seen the papa as my self and his son as someone I love deeply and all the obstacles that we overcome are all the challenges we face in life. So in the end what i'm taking away from this book is that in the end even though things may not turned out as planned always fight and move forward.

Pandora's Box

The main character is Zeus the god whose idea it was to create the first mortal woman. He gifted her with Pandora's box. The actual real main character is Pandora she is the first mortal woman created. She was made strong, beautiful, smart, and curious.

The myth starts in the heavens with the gods but mostly took place on earth in the household of Pandora and Epimethius.

Pandora decided that the box was meant for her to open. She got a crowbar and broke off the lock. Inside the box were all of the things that made life miserable; sickness, old age, anger, envy and lust. Also, racism sexism, and tourism. Along with that came communism, capitalism, drug addiction, alcoholism, pornography, censorship, wars, bombs, nuclear waste and all diseases is the main plot.

The dilemma of this story revolved around the gift that Papa Zeus gave Pandora and how she was made to be curious she opened it because it was a box the said not to open it or punished by death and she wanted to know what was in it.

This myth attempts to explain the origin of all the things that make anyone's life miserable and all human flaws.

Birth Order Research

Olmedo 1
Moises Olmedo
Mr. Ostini
English II Honors
26 August 2014

Does Your Birth Order Define You?
"We all live our lives our own ways and we all have a path to choose as a person," by anonymous. For instance there is a birth order research paper that will show where you fall in your family and your traits as a person. I have two older sisters and one younger but according to the birth order research I'm an only child. That classifies me as the oldest in my family tree and the BOR ( Birth Order Research ) says as an oldest child I get many character distinguishing traits. It says is the oldest I should be a procrastinator, organized and a leader. As I start to look back and think about how I am as a person these traits are pretty accurate. The Birth Order Research shows me my characteristic traits and how I can use them to live my life and how to choose a path as a better person.
Procrastination is a problem for everyone and it is one of my characteristics I wish I didn't have. As a person I procrastinate for everything. I don't do most of my homework until eight or nine o'clock and by time then I'm already tired. I have a lot of classes and I am a triathlete so I just like to wait until the last minute for everything. Also I procrastinate a lot when it comes to doing my chores. I will always wait until the last minute or until my mom yells at me. I think I put off a lot of my chores because I like to go with my girlfriend a lot and I'd rather do that. Although I do procrastinate a lot I have been changing this new year.
I tend to be more organized this year with the new schedule. I find that I have to be because if I'm not with all my rigorous courses I will fail. One of the ways I keep organized is my binder. I have to dividers for each class 1 for handouts and the second for notes and homework. I also have an agenda my agenda helps me a lot! I keep all my assignments in there and with all my classes it helps keep me on track. Even though I have been a procrastinator at times I am changing to become more of an organized person which the BOR has been right about so far.
The BOR have said lots of things about me but there's one that I think is true its being a leader. I try to be a one everyday and my mom coaches and teachers have all told me I'm a leader. My coaches have always told me I need to lead my team and put them in check so I always try to do so. I always try and motivate them, and a lot of them look up to me. I always try to bring everybody I know in like a family and I always try and help them not boss them around. Being a leader isn't easy and I'm struggling to be one. I just know for a fact that I am NOT a follower.
There are many things that can define me and the BOR has gotten really close to it. All the things It has said about me is true besides maybe one thing. Overall it is accurate research and I like how it helps me see what type of person I am. This research has shown me that birth order can define you. The BOR has helped me see that I need to stop procrastinating so I can be more organized and when I am more organized I can be a better leader. So in the end the birth order research shows me my characteristic traits and how I can use them to live my life and choose a path as a better person.

Birth Order Traits

Well organized
As of this year i have been very organized. I think i have to be in order to pass all my classes. I have an agenda that I write down all my homework in everyday and i also have a binder that has sections for each of my classes. Also all my notes are color coordinated.
Procrastinator
Although I am organized I am very very big procrastinator. I always usually wait until the last minute to do everything. That is why I have been trying to be organized and i've slightly stopped the procrastination.
Self centered
I don’t think I am self centered. I like to give a lot of attention to all of my friends and teammates. As a good leader which I try to be you can't be self centered.
Career might be computer engineering/science
As for my career I don't know what I am going into yet but most likely it will be engineering or science. I am really good with math and science so I like that type of stuff.
Going on to positions of leadership
I think I am going to positions of leadership. As a football player on the team I am one of the captains and i like to take control and lead my team. I lead the stretches and our jumping jacks a lot of them look up to me.

Reflections on week 1

As my experience goes with this class I do not think there are any factors that effect my experience with the class. I have a computer at home and I have a phone. Actually there is one thing, I just don't have a printer so I have to go to my aunts every time I need to print.

One of the beast things I've learned is that in order to be successful in life you have to be organized and if not you won't succeed. Me and my classmates learned this from our avid teacher. Knowing this year is going to he very tough I think being organized and having a binder and an agenda will and has deffinatly helped me so far.

What I'm most concerned about if failing the class. I have a lot of classes and a lot of homework I just don't want have a lot of work and fail. What I look fowars to learning is how to write even better. Writing isn't my best trait niether is reading so I need help in this category.
